strangers

i am not the most social of people. i am (mostly) happy with my own company. but i enjoy going out – sometimes that will be me on my tod going to see a movie or an art exhibition. other times it will be with some friends to enjoy a coffee, curry and a natter.

this weekend i got dragged along to see so progfolkpixie band. and i must say i was looking forward to it. but it seemed to be one of those nights that was destined for oddness.

before going to the gig/ club we ambled to a pub – on the way there a street punk with purplish hair said she liked my hair.
coming from the pub we were asked directions – i pointed the bloke in the right direction which ended up with lots of hand shaking, arm squeezing and kissing of my hand. it stopped short of him proclaiming full bodied love to me... but only just.

the venue was odd – one of the many old warehouses in the brick lane area – it had the smell of many old sessions of puke in it. very nice.

the bands were fun. circulus lived up to all joel promised me and power to the pixies is an epic. they enjoy themselves and while good musicians do not take themselves seriously.

joel left. i stayed for the last band.

at some point during that set 2 lasses played with my hair.
at some other point i got the feeling that people were looking at me
as if they thought they knew who i was.
then i went to rock out to a 60s rock pop disco (far out man it was great!)
then the main man from circulus asked where joel was – we chatted for a while.
then another man from circulus asked if i had been to alice in wonderlands- he mumbled something about zodiac mindwarp and me being on the cover of the lp.
that was pretty much me freaked out – so i left. (also all the pretty ladies had gone)
i left got some bagels walked home.
had some chavs in car go on about my hair.
got stopped by an elegant black american man who reminded me he had seen me before while walking back from a curry with (as he described her) “ a pretty girl” (i remembered it because it was also the night she let fly with a very magnificent fart that quite frankly scared the local kids).
he ended up tapping me for a quid. but i had had a good night so it was ok.
then a somalian asked me where was commercial street - told him he was on it, i asked him what he was looking for, “where the prostitutes stand” was his reply. top marks for brutal honesty... don't think any were working.
then 3 more sporty chavs asked directions and once again a get your hair cut... one day i think i am going to clock them. (actually i have spent several hours thinking of ways to kill them slowly. i know it is petty but they are such scum and are only “hard” because there are three of them. lordy i am sounding like nick parry-jones (who once walked after a car of youths in order to have a fight with them!)
then just as i am about to get into my road i can hear the click of heels (its 4am in the morning by this stage so the click is loud in the quiet night). i can also hear a large sobbing noise from her.
i expect her to avoid me (and wouldn’t blame her) but she follows me down the road.
again a large sob.
i ask are you ok, she says yes, picks up the pace walks in front of me and yet another large sob.
all in all a dull night.

must do it again.

(oh and the lass who complemented my hair on the saturday night got a chance to do it again on sunday as i walked by her again. only this time she was standing on the street corner touting for trade. to her credit she didn’t ask if i wanted business and we had a bit of a laugh.
it’s nice to be appreciated!)

lost

darn another post lost into the blogosphere.
computers hate me.
but then i realise i had written nothing but drivel - so blogger has saved my dear reader from being bored.
all hail the machine editor.

weekends

i am beginning to hate the weekend. there is too much pressure to do something with the time and invariably i end up doing nothing. oh it's my fault and i admit it, after all it is not hard to jump on a bus (well that is not strictly true as first you have to wait for it to come along and then hope that is it not rammed to the gills with other passengers - not pleasent at the moment as most of the buses seem to have decided that it is artic tempratures outside and have ramped the heating up so that you could grow tropical fruits in the bus. let me tell you this does not complement some of my fellow passengers hygenie state!)and go and do something, anything. there are galleries to be seen, photographs to be taken, dull melancolony poems to be written and dreams to be dreamt.
basically i am wasting my life away - i am doing nothing with it, which isn't to say i am in a position where i have the ability to change the world or contribute something meaningful to it.

so the weekend has recently become a pit of despair for me. i spend time wondering what it is all about, what it means and why on earth the most i can do at the weekend is sit in the flat and read comics!

i guess it gets worse for me this time of year. i hate christmas. i hate the commericalisation of christmas, i hate the fact that christmas has been overtaken by the need to paaaaarty, to indulge and pretend you are friends with all and sundry. but, perversely, what i hate most of all is that there is a 2-3 week period where whole chunks of the city just close up and you can't do anything.

i need to do an audit of my life, my expectations and sort myself out.

i am a little embarrassed that i have just written a post that could have been done by a kurt cobain fan! (next time i get this urge i will just write about how my latest trip to a curry house has turned my guts into mulch.... i am sure my dear reader will prefer to read about that!)

phrases

currently i am going through a phase where certain phrases make me go arrrrraaaaaaaaaaaaagh! for no other reason than they are pointless additions to a sentence, add nothing to the conversation and normally (well for me) highlight the lack of thought that has gone into the argument.

they are phrases that should be up there with "... some of my best friends are (insert minority of choice here) but......"

the first of these phrases are:
"it's 2004 and still people are (insert action of choice here)". i most recently heard this in two debates one on gay rights - generated from the fallout over gay marriages in the usa elections, secondly over the racist chanting aimed at english footballers in the friendly match they played.
in both cases the attitudes were wrong - of course gays should be allowed to marry if they want to and of course footballers of any colour should be able to play the game of their choice without hearing abuse (ok this may not stand for man united or spurs players........ - can you guess who i support ?). it goes without saying the world would be a much better and much happier place if people were more tolerant.
but by invoking the year we are in and doing it in an exasperated tone adds nothing to your point as i am willing to lay money on the fact that a similar turn of phrase has been used each year for well as long as there have been years. more than likely it appears in the diaries of anne frank and samuel pepys.

another meaningless phrase is "its my human right" most recently seen by me in an argument where a family wants to send their child to a faith school, so far so good. only problem is the child and the family do not share the faith of the school. so the school, which is faith based, is refusing them entry to the school. the result of this - the family wants to take the school, which is faith based, to court because barring their faithless child into a faith based school is an infringement to their human rights.
i wonder if i can use that next time i want to wander through the girls showers ? to stop me is an infringement of my human rights.

(one of the other commentators on this makes the great comment "oh imagine the uproar if a state school banned muslim and catholic kids because they were trying to go to a secular school", which misses several of the points to the story in order to score a cheap shot.
while not defending faith schools it is interesting that the reason the family had chosen the school was because it was good and they wanted their child to have the best - nothing wrong there. i wonder if there had been a private school near them they would have tried to get in there and claimed it as their human right to do so, or if there had been an all girls school ?
sure there are problems with state schools and if you think there are then lobby for change - make all schools the same - give all kids the same chances - don't let anyone have an unfair advantage, i shall stop this rant short of saying burn down eton, but the only true way to make education fair is not to abolish faith, sex, status based schools but to make the state schools much much better than they are now.
oh the other commentator is the tit tim lott - he writes in the evening standard, he is not as funny as me and makes about as much sense as i do.
(and a blog for the future would be - just what are human rights - is there such a thing ?)

the other phrase i can't stand is "i'm a celebrity get me out of here" i don't even watch the programme but i have to put up with people who do talking about it.

thatcher

sometimes it's the small things in life that make you smile.
sometimes it's the unexpected that makes you happy.
for me it is mark thatcher's current predicament.

there he is part of a failed coup (look i know it should be innocent until proven guilty but it's mark thatcher and frankly even if the pope said he was innocent i would doubt it) that was going to overthrow the government of equatorial guinea. caught with his trousers down, accused of funding the mercenaries who were going to overthrow the government. like iraq this was all for altruistic reasons and not for the oil that is there (no, nope, nada it was not about oil!)
thatcher supposedly funded the attempt to the tune of $275,000 and now that it was foiled not only is he out of pocket but he is out on bail and confined to cape town.
and i know it is not very christian of me but i am already tired of hearing about how he is ruined and from an interview with vanity fair he says "I will never be able to do business again. Who will deal with me?" (obviously vanity fair for a start....)
or how he is so glad his dad didn't see this happening to him (i guess that shows there is little love lost between maggie and her son or perhaps it is just an admission on mark's part that magaret "iron lady" thatcher no longer has her marbles so isn't aware of what a mess her son is in!)
he is apparently furious that he is confined to south africa and that his phones and email are being monitored - well that will teach him not to get involved in the overthrow of governments.

it's not like his moaning is a proof of innocence more a case of petulance and fear (though i can't blame him - he faces a possible 12 years inside a less than nice african jail.....) and now some of his friends are claiming that this is all about some people still wanting to settle scores with baroness thatcher.
not sure many mining communities are up for this sort of ruse - though i wouldn't past arthur scargill.

lazy

ugh - have become very lazy when it comes to posting on here.
ok ok there have been various on going problems with computers, some of them still not resolved. my relationship with computers is very love hate - i love to hate them (boom boom - to quote basil brush).

there have been a number of things i was going to write about and then just have dropped because the time has moved on..... (glad i am not doing this for a living thats for sure).

so at sometime in the future you might get to read what where going to be my thoughts on the following:
porn - why i like it, why i consume it and how it is becoming more acceptable. the thought was sparked by two articles in the business press.
faith - why i believe and why i can't make sense of why i believe. thought about it because of an article in wired magazine and prospect magazine.
digby jones - he is a fat tosser and why - again something from the business news and the fact the slug has become a bid ambassador for olympics 2012.
2012 - no no no no and why i don't want the games in london.
charlie - why i agree with prince charles (a statement i won't make very often) and why i think new labour just missed the point.
david blunkett - the closet nasty nazi who should be appearing in the producers rather than in the government.
bootlegs - why i download.
and so many many others. (oh and there might even be some nice fluffy funny stories).

but i am trying to get the whole thing back on track.
there is a lot going on in the world and i want to comment on it - if only to vent, if only to make sense of the things that are going on.

so never fear you faithful readers i will be boring you silly with more from here sooner than you care for.

Toilets 'a forgotten human right'
who would have thought that there was such a thing a world toilet summit, who would have thought that there would be 400 delegates to it!
and who would have thought that the organiser could have come up with this perfect soundbite without 1] a big arsed (excuse the pun) grin on his face or 2] weeks of preparation to get the right wording.
"The entire toilet movement is taking on the world," as said by jack sim.

"The WTO says people feel like they are living in a civilised society if the toilets are clean." (i am not sure if that is the world trade organisation or the world toilet organisation)

even more priceless from mr sim is

now as you know i am not an advocate for the olympics in london in 2012 - but i am pretty sure we can provide some good toilets. and now i know why people always seem to be disappointed with me when they tell their holiday stories and i never ask about the toilets - it seems it is one of the things you have to ask....

ironically there is an important point among all of this and that is of course without such things as good sanitation and clean water supply you are always going to be fighting a losing battle with disease.
so this christmas rather than spend money of useless presents why not check out the oxfam website, or the VSO website or anyone of those sites you prefer and see if you can find somewhere you can donate cash for a new water pump, filtration system etc for a third world village etc. you know it will make more sense than getting uncle ernie a new sweater.

oh and by the way friday is world toilet day. for more go here so remember to flush with pride.

condi as secretary of state, although she is an honorary member of my top tory totty list, is a scary scary prospect. why do you say that pat? i hear you cry. why pat when you so obviously like right wing woman, why then is it scary pat?
well simply the TTT list has up until now be filled with women who were not going to hasten armageddon (and i ain't talking about the bruce movie).
even so condi is staying on the TTT.

now i am wondering what the 2008 election is going to look like? will it be a cat fight between condi and hils? will rice and clinton get it on and get down and dirty to see which one of them can deliver the electoral elbow and reign supreme in what can only be the political slug fest to come.

hero

we all need heroes; we need that shining example to look up to and for that hero to inspire us to acts of greatness.
the following tale is of a hero, a hero that has to remain anonymous so that they can continue their good deeds and in order to thwart the criminals who have sworn to kill our hero. the hero’s name is not known, he can’t be named because of the threats of the drug lords. not even his breed can be known.
his breed?
yes our hero is a dog.
he could be a collie, a spaniel or a labrador (apparently the dog drug patrol work in teams of six and a mix of 3 breeds). what we do know is that the dog has been remarkably successful in sniffing out drugs in a manchester prison, stopping anyone trying to smuggle drugs into the facility. so much so the dog was relieved of duty for a few days to be re-tested to ensure there was nothing funny going on (perhaps he was eating performance enhancing chum?)
however “he was found to be 100 per cent accurate on every test." good dog!
at one point there was a 30% drug use in the prison now it is down to 16% and this is attributed to the dog with the golden nose!
this success has meant there is an underworld contract out on the dog – all we can hope is the cunning canine manages to stay ahead of the crims and keeps its nose clean and keeps up the good work. for the story go here & here.

but heroic dogs are not new – oh no.
for some of us we have grown up with the heroic dog who has led by their example. which dogs am i talking about – well how about krypto, how about bat-hound. now they are true heroes. but they were not alone. in the moments we sing praise of an unknown drug sniffing dog let us not forget the space canine patrol who featured such heroes as mammoth mutt, tail terrier, chameleon collie, hot dog, tusky husky, bull dog and paw pooch! these canine heroes kept us safe.

they along with the unknown derring do dog of strangeways prison make sure that ruff justice is served to those who deserve it.

this is going to be an experiment, and i am not sure how it is going to work. basically this is going to be an occasional feature in my blog - it is going to the email exchange between me and an ex-colleague. it will be the "political" debates we have (i will still clear of the other debates we have as sometimes talking about the state of welsh rugby can get pretty ugly).
ok some background about npj - he is about my age, he is opinionated and passionate about many things, well read on many subjects, a bit (ok a lot) of an anorak when it comes to matters military (and trust me when a man comes back from seeing a movie like gladiator to say they didn't have stirrups back then - you know you are dealing with an anorak of a major type!) npj is welsh - which will explain some of the digs that go back and forth between us. he is also dyslexic and a bad typist - which will explain some of the spelling errors (i can only claim bad typing as my excuse). he also has a tendency to use initials for shorthand, sometimes these are obvious and sometimes they are not...... it all adds to the fun. i am not going to amend the emails - you get them as they are. where possible i will add in links to the relevant piece that has sparked it off. sit back enjoy. You'd think he was delighted that the effete liberals lost their bid to the white house to those wonderful folks of true faith, who like flying the good old stars and bars ala John Ashcroft.

And this weekend's Grdn had a loaded article on the Dutch situation, hell you'd think van Gogh was a rabid racist who commited suicide to spite society.

Are people of faith stupid or nutters, yes and no, just like secular liberals, each camp has twits.
That prick Galloway before the Iraq war said he wasn't a pascifist and Dressden deserved what it got in WW2, he should read about it some time the pig, it wasn't the SS melting in the inerno.
I know I am often in danger of patronizing religion myself because I can't buy into it, yet I know inspirational people who get it, plus I recognize liberals can be as sanctimonious and preachy as anyone.

Yet peoples faith only needs to be respected if its worthy of such.

Secular liberals, there will be religious liberal though mostly jewish, can and should engage the religious in America, (I'd start with where's your love they neighbor mindset gone, doh there I go again), because they won it for George, who won it for business and the old testament God, but they didn't win it by much.
So let's not delude ourselves shall we by suggesting that everyone attending church in the US is a gun owning, gay hating, bigot, but let's not kid ourselves either that it's all gangstas and neonazis doing the hatine thing; or delude ourselves that we can cross the middle ground and give up womens and gay rights to catch the religious floks block vote shall we?

Hypocricy is the crux of it.

Gary Younge has joined the band wagon of blaming the Democrats for not engaging the religious block, and sniping at elitist liberals for having a go at religion, which in Europe is prevelent amongst the minorities, and so for good meassure he yet again goes on about post colonial closet racism.
Problem is, until November 2nd, Gary Younge was with that liberal elite that hadn't taken seriously enough those faithful legions and is yet another pundit not only wise after the event, but suddenly eluding to a faith of his own.

I find it as patronising as I guess the religious find being told they are out of touch, except that now it is secular liberals who are out of touch and rapidly becoming a silly minority with too much to say about what is no longer important to the majority.

I mentioned the Netherlands piece to emphasise the deference being paid to religion and the media bias, when after all its the critic of an aspect of a religion that is dead.

I could have mentioned that I keep reading about liberals being respectful of islam while ridiculing christianity, yet what I actually read is them ridiculing hypocrits like George Bush and not people like Archbishop Williams or Pope John Paul.

I am tired of cheap shots and blame when its the other lot who are creating the problems.

The problem is not that the american religious voted – at best karl rove was only after 4 million of their votes – its that others didn’t vote the way they thought they should. Such as the youth vote which according to some didn’t vote the way they were supposed to.
Additionally I think it would be a gross stupidity to believe that all the anti-gay, all the anti-abortionists and all the pro-gun people were necessarily religious in any sense of the word. You don’t have to be a believer of any god to want to beat up gays or place a protest vote. I am sure the kids who killed the gay barman on the south bank were all regular church goers (mind I am going to feel stupid if they turn out to be regulars at the local parish).
Plus as a pal of mine said bush made a big deal about how he would protect america, kerry didn’t get that across. (it matters not that the world is a lot less safe under bush than it was 5 years ago!)
We live in the period of politics of fear – and the politicians are not singing songs of hope and bright futures they are telling us that without them it will be worse and darker.

I think he was after more than 4 milln, 70% of Americans attend church, plus you've synogoes and mosques. But I know what you mean about the fear factor, and the media let the Republican party play it shamlessly. Dick Chenney persisted in talking about links between alQeda and Iraq even after his nations intelligence community admitted to none and the media let him.

Last week I mentioned the role of the media, and the difficulties of getting a message across that people don't want to hear, or vested interests don't want them to. Remember the NRA was running spots for Bush on the netwoks, TV evangelists were stating the President was a man of faith, and this with the majority of the electorate being poorly informed and attaching huge significance to single issues.

I appreciate your point about the teen trash that beat the gay barman to death, they may well be unaware of the recent activities in the Anglican Synod or Islams stance on homosexuality, having received no moral instruction from anyone, religious or otherwise. Just as I accept that not agreeing with something as evangelicals don't in the case of homosexuality isn't the same as taking malicious or even civil action against it. Not everyone with religion is professing the word 24 7, or even beyond their place of worship.

I think the Democrats can fight a much better more focused campaign, none of which is served by the headless chicken reaction I've descerned post election from it's supposed supporters.
The shock is the lose, not the margin, which while a clear margin isn't great.
On a platform of social justice and opportunity that express the essential aspirations of all religions, the democrats can appeal to the best elements in Americas religious community. They should look to court the inclusive not the exclusive, but if those of an exclusive mind set are a significant factor, then heaven help them all.

elton

back in the 70s when elton john was the man he gave an interview with the rolling stone where he admitted that he was bisexual but that he drew “the line with goats”.
while i have never been a fan there has always been something charming about elton and his music – he never seemed pompous about it and he never seemed to set out to shock, but in the early 70s he was held in high regard mentioned in the same tones as bowie.
his career stalled in the midst of punk (punks never quite got the joy of concept albums… more fool them!) and in that great rock star tradition he retired, and only to, again in that great rock star tradition, come back again. the come back years saw him as a bit of joke, until such time as diana let it be known that she liked him. then suddenly he was the favourite of all those diana lovers out there.
in his sing-a-long with the boy band blue he not only appeared to be more talented than them all, but he was more butch than them all (admittedly this is damning with faint praise!)
recently he has been in the news for a series of events – none of which have much to do with his music. he has thrown tantrums at various paparazzi, he has attacked madonna for being nothing more than a fake and has appeared on national radio during the breakfast slot to let fly with a number of four letter word expletives! in short elton has decided to live his life like he is in spinal tap.
so not only has there been the music and drug excesses, there have been the gaudy clothes, the chairmanship of a football club, the marrying of his sound engineer and of course the many terrible hair transplants that never seem to work.
elton john is obviously a man who has long since stopped taking himself seriously and has long since stopped caring what we think of him and good luck to him for that.
elton john is the celebrities’ celebrity. he is what we want from our celebrities there is enough of the ordinary in him that we can recognise his foibles as ones we share, and there is enough extra ordinariness to remind us that we really don’t want to be like him at all.
so after all these years elton is, to quote the man, still standing. and for that i hope you join me in raising a glass and giving three cheers to a podgy, badly dressed queen with a terrible hair transplant. to you elton i doff my cap you restore my faith in celebrities. i give you elton john, a national treasure, long may he reign.

fireworks

i love fireworks, but it has been years since i went to a firework display. i was at tower hill for the millennium fireworks, and while a lot of people were disappointed by them i was enthralled.
there is a childlike glee watching a rocket scream and screech into the night sky and then explode in to a shower of stars that burn and dazzle for all too brief moment before they die and fall to earth. the whiz bang, the smoke drifting across the the area, the smell of burning all sets the pulse racing.
i enjoy walking around the city during the firework period and catching the rockets blazing up the sky, wondering where the next one will explode. the sounds of distant bangers and popping of rockets and ground fireworks, the hidden fizzle of sparklers as you walk past walled gardens. the city is transformed into a magical place with mystery noises and phantom lights.
i love fireworks as much now as when i was a kid.
the only difference now is that i do not go out hunting for the casings of old rockets like i used to.

but next year i am going to have to go here as it sounds like this is a town that knows how to enjoy fireworks.

peeves

pet peeves, we all have them.
given i am a person who sees the world as half empty rather than half full you can guess i probably have more pet peeves than most. i tell you it is hard being a misanthrope.

so in no particular order here are some of my current peeves.

richard littlejohn - he is like a scab you know you shouldn't pick but you can't help yourself. i know i will never agree with him, but i still look through the sun to see if he has a commentary piece in there. how he gets away with it i don't know.

umbrellas - great idea: keep the rain off, stay dry. just a shame so many people are happy to stroll down very crowded main roads with things that are best described as prototypes for the usa's missile defense shield. these umbrellas don't just keep people dry they are keeping small countys dry. ok it's the brollys themselves i hate it is the tossers who use them and think that it is ok to go around with a dangerous weapon and not make the slightest effort to make sure they do not take your eye out!

personal stereos - have them, enjoy them, show them off as a work of art - but please please please get decent headphones so that i am not badgered by your bad taste in music.

mobile phones - a necessary evil i know but i still don't like them. it seems people have forgotten how to talk at a normal level when they have used the mobile. i have no interest in your conversation, so keep it down. and when you are walking in the street with your phone remember there are other people around so we do not want to have to avoid you when you are falling around in some sort of spastic fit because a friend on the other end of the conversation has told you a dull joke.

buses - people who constantly ring the stop button even though the big light says the bus is stopping. (true do it often enough and it begins to sound like a stockhausen piece and i begin to like it but that don't happen often.)

ugly blokes with pretty girlfriends - this is self evident really.

computers - they do not like me it is official. yet another one died on me. why doesn't it happen to other people? don't know.

christmas - yup the whole thing about christmas is annoying, especially the false enjoyment of the thing. suddenly everyone is your friend. and then you have to spend weeks hearing about how much fun everyone had, this is magnified by parents.

fashion parents - there comes a moment when in a conversation you realise you are talking to that sort of parent because no matter what you are talking about it will get turned around to their children.

lets get a couple of things straight at the outset.
1] i have no problems with the police. it's one of those necessary jobs that someone has to do and the police are not liked - that is until you need them. i wanted to be a copper, i think it was all that watching z-cars and reading ed mcbain that did it to me - however i am colour blind so that was me stopped from being a plod. (often wonder what would have happened if i had been able to go through with my first choice career. one thing that would have happened would be that i would not have brought down the ire of the super radicals at college who couldn't see the irony in the comment "the police wouldn't let me join because i colour blind as it meant i wouldn't know who to hit in a riot", oddly the peter sutcliffe joke didn't go down well either. i tell you alternative comedy's loss was distributions gain!)
so i have no beef with the police.
2] i am anti drug. i don't smoke, i don't drink and i don't do drugs (oh ok i know coffee is a drug and yes i am almost at a point where i need to mainline it to get a benefit from it!). i have been pretty much anti drug most of my life.

right that sets the scene a little (and you can already guess where this is going).

i was coming back from a meal out with some friends, we had gone to a wagamama's (very nice it was too, a little expensive for me - but then i tend to go for quantity rather than quality). as we made our way back to liverpool street station we all smelt the heavy perfume of cannabis, so strong it was thick and sickly in the air. and it so obviously came from the skinny skanky youths who had scurried past us (part speed walking and part running). so we get to the station, we all start chatting, the two women who were with us go into the station to catch a tube. that left four of us, and the usual lets go for a drink, no i can't , oh you know you want to, no, yes type thing.
when all of a sudden a fresh faced blonde buzzcut bloke strides up to us, whips out his id and tells us he suspects we are smoking and carrying drugs.
as he is telling me this the plod squad had surrounded us (yeah like any of us looked like we were capable of running!) so under section 23 we are all to be searched.
i get a little bloke rummaging through my pockets and bag - he looks like he has only just gotten out of junior school, and looks like he would have trouble breaking up a fight in a junior school playground. while he is doing that i am being asked questions by a wpc - such as name, address, age, height, do i consider myself white british (how i wished i had said no it's black british) so that she can radio it in to see if i am a hardened crim.
my favourite question was "do you smoke?" why did that matter? when i said no it wasn't like they stopped the search!
meanwhile young plod is asking do i have anything sharp in my pockets - no i say. well that is until he finds the boxcutter i still had in there - oooops. then when he is searching my bag he finds my recent collection of prostitute call cards - ooooooops (he also finds a notebook i thought i had lost - so every cloud has a silver lining!) .
of course the search is taking place in the open so every tom dick and harry is watching us.

naturally they find nothing.
the detective who had "spotted" us smoking, but had missed the culprits (and i admit they were moving at a fast pace and were drug thin so could have just appeared to be a whisp in the night to the untrained eye, besides we were middle aged and walking really slow....) just moved off without saying a word.
it's at moments like these you can see how they must irritate (to put it mildly) the ethnic youth they stop.

when you are stopped like that you are given a "report" of the incident.
some odd bits about that:
1] it tells you what they can and can't do - so it's nice to see that after the event.
2] it's a record in their books - so does that mean it goes on to a computer somewhere? something to check via the freedom of information at some point in the future.

now the really annoying part of this is that when i am reading this the next morning - they have my name, address and height right.
i will even give them that i am stocky build.
but i am described as having long grey hair. it's brown with some silver in it.

(it's not like i am vain!)

there is a serious point that comes out of this - as i said at the start i am not a fan of drugs i don't use them and probably never will. but i have moved my position from an outright ban, clamp down on the distribution of it, lock 'em up and throw away the key to a make it totally legal tpye of stance. (to be honest this was also helped by the fact that the only people i have known to have an addiction as part of the reasons for their deaths were both addicted to booze and fags and both were critical of drugs. the only difference seemed to be some you can get over the counter - the other you had to find a dealer).
let the tobacco and alcohol companies coin a nice profit by selling and distributing cannabis, heroin, e and whatever else the drug of choice is for the users of the world.
strikes me that legalisation of it has more positives going for it than trying to ban it does.
it means there is no link to the underworld, it means it can be priced sensibly, it means it can be gotten at any time, it means the state can rake in taxes from it, it means you take drug dealers off the streets - after all where would you go to buy you hit from a dodgy bloke in a club or your local newsagent or supermarket? it's a win win situation for all concerned. it also means that the police do not have to waste their times on silly stop and searches.
so you know it makes sense - make all drugs completely legal. it will be my rallying cry when i go and stand for election.
